PRIOR KNOWLEDGE AND OTHER ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for the Sustainable Urban Management - Master’s programme, the requirements are a Bachelor´s degree (undergraduate cycle) corresponding to a minimum of 180 credits, including 90 credits specialisation in one of the following subjects/educational areas:

- Social Structure and Building Technology (including Landscape Architecture)
- Geography
- Environmental Science
- Political Science
- Business Administration
- Economics
- Leadership and organisation

Alternatively, one of the following professional degrees must have been obtained:
- Degree of Master of Science in Architecture
- Degree of Master of Science in Landscape Architecture
- Degree of Bachelor of Science in Landscape Construction and Management
- Degree of Master of Science or Bachelor of Science in Engineering, with aim on building technology, construction engineering, or energy and environmental systems. Also students with a degree from the educational programme Horticultural Management - Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor´s Programme are eligible.

The specific admission requirements according to the above can also be fulfilled by those having corresponding qualifications from a foreign degree or if corresponding qualifications have been obtained in alternative ways.

In addition, knowledge corresponding to Swedish for general entry requirements to Swedish higher education and English 6 (Swedish secondary school) is required. This is fulfilled by those who have a degree at first cycle level from SLU comprising at least 180 credits. For applicants from the Nordic countries and some English speaking countries, special rules apply.

For entry to the different courses included within the programme, the specific entry requirements prescribed for each individual course apply.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

General objectives
The general objectives for first- and second-cycle courses and programmes are specified in the Swedish Higher Education Act (Chapter 1, Sections 8–9).

Objectives for a Degree in XX
In accordance with the appendix to the Ordinance for the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, for a Degree of Master (120 credits), the student shall have:

Knowledge and understanding
For a Degree of Master of Science (120 credits), the student shall
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the main field of study, including both broad knowledge of the field and a considerable degree of specialised knowledge in certain areas of the field as well as insight into current research and development work, and
- demonstrate specialised methodological knowledge in the main field of study.

Competence and skills
For a Degree of Master of Science (120 credits), the student shall
- demonstrate the ability to critically and systematically integrate knowledge and analyse, assess and deal with complex phenomena, issues and situations even with limited information,
- demonstrate the ability to identify and formulate issues critically, autonomously and creatively as well as to plan and, using appropriate methods, undertake specialised tasks within predetermined time frames and so contribute to the formation of knowledge as well as the ability to evaluate this work,
- demonstrate the ability in speech and writing both nationally and internationally to report clearly and discuss his or her conclusions and the knowledge and arguments on which they are based in dialogue with different audiences, and
- demonstrate the skills required for participation in research and development work or autonomous employment in some other qualified capacity.

Judgement and approach
For a Degree of Master of Science (120 credits), the student shall
- demonstrate the ability to make assessments in the main field of study informed by relevant disciplinary, social and ethical considerations and also to demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work,
- demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of research, its role in society and the responsibility of the individual for how it is used, and
- demonstrate the ability to identify the personal need for further knowledge and take responsibility for his or her ongoing learning.

DEGREE

Degree awarded on completion of the programme
Sustainable Urban Management – Master’s Programme aims at a Degree of Master of Science with a major in Landscape Architecture, a general qualification. See local instructions. The programme also enables a Degree of Master (60 credits) with a Major in Built Environment from Malmö University.

Students who fulfill the qualification requirements for the Degree of Master of Science (120 credits) will be provided with a degree certificate upon request. The degree certificate will specify the qualification as Degree of Master of Science (120 credits) with a major in Landscape Architecture.

Degree requirements
A Degree of Master of Science (120 credits) with a major in Landscape Architecture will be awarded on completion of the course examinations (Pass grades) to the value of 120 credits, with the following requirements:
- a minimum of 30 credits courses shall concern in-depth study within Landscape Architecture (A1N, A1F),
- a minimum of 30 credits shall concern independent work (degree project) within Landscape Architecture (A2E),
- first-cycle courses can constitute a maximum of 30 credits, provided these credits were not included in a qualifying Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

There is additional requirement of a completed Degree of Bachelor, Professional Degree of a minimum of 180 credits or a corresponding overseas qualification.

CONTENT AND OUTLINE

Programme description
The general purpose of the programme is to give deeper knowledge in sustainable urban development. Since the work to establish sustainable solutions with necessity includes different perspectives, such as economic, social and ecological, it is important for the basic idea of the programme that students are recruited from different subject areas and professions. Hence, the programme is aimed at active professionals as well as newly graduated bachelors from a number of different, but contextually relevant subject areas. The programme is given in cooperation with Malmö University. A number of public and private partners are involved through different partner networks. The forms of education are aimed at creating a constructive dialogue involving important stakeholders in urban development. The purpose is to take advantage of the students’ different competences to as high a degree as possible, at the same time as theoretical depth is explored, particularly within landscape architecture and built environment. Case studies, evaluation and analysis are especially emphasised. Working with actual cases is important when establishing encounters and integration among different specialists.

Choices can be made between courses offered by Malmö University in spring term of year 1. Here students can choose two out of three offered courses, students who wish more alternatives, have to find these themselves. The courses during year 1 are given at 50% speed, making it possible for the students to choose whether to study at full time or half time. The courses during the second year are, however, given at full time.

All programme objectives are treated already during the first semester, but are deepened during the rest of the programme, and the scientific aspects are especially trained in the final master project. During the second semester it is possible to choose the one-year master’s thesis course, which also makes the students eligible for a 60 credits degree of master at Malmö University.

The students are expected to acquire knowledge on important research and methodology regarding economic, ecological and social aspects of sustainable urban development. The students are also expected to connect different theoretical perspectives of sustainable urban development to practical examples and integrate those perspectives for evaluation of different development efforts. Furthermore, it is important to identify incitement structures, legal aspects and social circumstances that can be either opportunities or obstacles for sustainable development, and to be able to develop and motivate the choice of cooperation forms among important stakeholders for development of sustainable solutions in the urban environment.

Included among the skills that the programme facilitates are to identify problems in a critical, reflective and independent way, to subsequently conduct scientifically founded analyses of urban areas in a sustainability perspective, and to make proposals and motivate them before different important stakeholders in sustainable urban development. A very important principle within the programme is to be able to initiate, organise and lead processes aimed at sustainable urban development, based on an understanding of the complexity that this involves.

The programme language is Swedish.

Courses in the programme
The programme consists of seven courses, of which four are given by Malmö University, and a master’s project. At programme admission, the students are also automatically admitted to the first course, Challenges of the City and Sustainable Urban Development in Theory and Practice. In spring term of year 1 three courses are offered by Malmö University, of which two are usually chosen. An independent master’s project of 30 credits (in Landscape Architecture, A2E) is mandatory for a Master’s degree.

• Master’s (One-Year) Thesis within Sustainable Urban Development, 15 credits (built environment, A1E)
• Theoretical Aspects of Planning and Management for Sustainable Development of the Urban Landscape, 15 credits (landscape architecture, A1N) – SLU
• Applied Planning and Management for Sustainable Development of the Urban Landscape, 15 credits (landscape architecture, A1F) – SLU
• Master’s Project in Landscape Architecture, 30 credits (landscape architecture, A2E) – SLU
