The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, The LTV Faculty in Alnarp, is recruiting three professors within Horticulture. The professors shall interact and connect activities in Plant Protection, Plant Breeding and Production Systems.
The Department of Plant Protection Biology is an interdisciplinary constellation, encompassing the Units of Chemical Ecology, Resistance Biology and Integrated Plant Protection, providing excellent opportunities for strong research collaboration within and outside the departmental area. Research efforts at the department are directed towards both fundamental and applied research. Applied plant protection research is carried out in collaboration with industry and focuses primarily on the development of environmentally sustainable pest and disease control strategies for agriculture and horticulture, both in Sweden and internationally.
The Integrated Plant Protection Unit has a broad knowledge in IPM that links basic and applied research, through internal and external, including national and international, collaboration. By designing research programs that encompass all steps, from multi-stakeholder research question definitions, through the acquisition of knowledge, to the transition to the field, we set novel strategies for safe pest management.
Subject area: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an interdisciplinary strategy that focuses on long-term prevention of plant pests and/or diseases, through a combination of measures, including biological control, chemical control, use of resistant varieties and cultural practices. Control methods are selected and applied in order to minimize the risk to human health, beneficial and non-target organisms, and the environment.
Duties: The selected candidate shall do research within IPM, dealing with pests and/or diseases, and their control in mainly horticultural production relevant for northern Europe. It is expected that the selected candidate will utilize and widen established scientific networks, both nationally and internationally. Besides research, the candidate is expected to lead, organize and develop teaching activities at both undergraduate and graduate levels within plant protection topics. The duties include further developing research and education in the subject in collaboration with faculty and university researchers and teachers and to disseminate research finds and other relevant subject information to the public.
Qualifications:
A person who has demonstrated both academic and teaching skills shall be qualified for appointment as a professor. The applicant must be scientifically proficient in the subject area for the post and hold a PhD or the equivalent. The applicant must be pedagogically proficient and possess the ability to integrate pedagogical application with the role of researcher. Equal attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching skills and the assessment of academic proficiency.
Assessment criteria:
The potential to develop and coordinate strong research will be of high priority. Applicants should have in depth knowledge of crop production systems relevant to current focus areas at the department and the faculty of LTV. The successful applicant should have applied competence in IPM, an established academic profile, and a solid publication record in their respective field of research within sustainable plant protection. Previous engagement with stakeholders, such as growers, advisors and private companies is a merit. Pedagogical and administration skills as well as experience in personal resource management will be considered.

The Faculty of Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Crop Production Science (LTV) is responsible for research, teaching, environmental monitoring and assessment as well as outreach and collaboration in the fields of landscape planning and horticulture. The LTV Faculty is also active in the fields of agriculture, food, production, health, quality of life, environment and water.
The majority of the faculty’s employees and students are based on Campus Alnarp, between Lund and Malmö. The LTV Faculty houses six departments and a large number of collaborative centres.
Campus Alnarp lies in Sweden’s most dynamic agricultural and horticultural region. It is situated close to the student towns of Lund and Malmö, a short distance from the sea and in close proximity to Copenhagen’s city life. The Öresund region is in an expansive phase, in which knowledge, education and research have a central significance. On Campus Alnarp, the focus is on landscape planning and horticulture.
