The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, The LTV Faculty in Alnarp, is recruiting three professors within Horticulture. The professors shall interact and connect activities in Plant Protection, Plant Breeding and Production Systems.
Research at the Department of Biosystems and Technology explores interactions between soil, plants, animals, environment, climate and humans in systems for sustainable production of food and renewable raw materials. Teaching and research deal with questions about sustainable and efficient use of limited resources. The production system is a common denominator uniting the research groups within the Department.
Subject area: Within the research area of Horticulture, to which the appointment belongs, research is undertaken on horticultural production systems to promote sustainable and resource efficient production of horticultural plants. This research is a central part of the Department's broad systems-orientated research on production systems. It relates to other research activities on crop rotation, horticultural microbiology, systems analysis and sustainability issues in horticultural production systems and to research on plant physiological parameters and plant interactions with external factors such as climate, nutrients, substrates and water.
Duties: The responsibilities associated with the position cover research, teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and co-operation with external institutions and surrounding businesses. The main task of the professor is to strengthen and coordinate research within the field. The position also involves playing an active part in teaching and in quality assurance and development of the horticultural degree programmes at SLU. The duties include further developing research and education in the subject in collaboration with faculty and university researchers and teachers and to disseminate research finds and other relevant subject information to the public.
Qualifications:
The successful applicant will have proven academic and teaching skills appropriate for the post of professor and will also be scientifically proficient in the subject area for the professorship and hold a PhD or the equivalent. The successful applicant will be pedagogically proficient and possess the ability to integrate pedagogical application with the role of researcher. Equal weight will be given to the applicant’s teaching skills and academic proficiency.
Assessment criteria:
Since the subject of horticultural production systems is of great importance, not least to the development of future food supply, the position as professor requires broad knowledge of horticultural production systems and of the horticultural business sector and its conditions. The successful applicant will act as a unifying force and an important resource for the Department’s activities and must possess a broad range of skills. A willingness to work across departmental and disciplinary boundaries is a prerequisite for the work. The successful applicant will have well-established scientific experience and qualifications, with very good skills in horticultural production systems and knowledge of production physiology. Prior experience from the industry will be considered a merit. The applicant is expected to use and develop his or her existing network, both nationally and internationally, to strengthen the discipline. Emphasis will also be placed on leadership skills.

The Faculty of Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Crop Production Science (LTV) is responsible for research, teaching, environmental monitoring and assessment as well as outreach and collaboration in the fields of landscape planning and horticulture. The LTV Faculty is also active in the fields of agriculture, food, production, health, quality of life, environment and water.
The majority of the faculty’s employees and students are based on Campus Alnarp, between Lund and Malmö. The LTV Faculty houses six departments and a large number of collaborative centres.
Campus Alnarp lies in Sweden’s most dynamic agricultural and horticultural region. It is situated close to the student towns of Lund and Malmö, a short distance from the sea and in close proximity to Copenhagen’s city life. The Öresund region is in an expansive phase, in which knowledge, education and research have a central significance. On Campus Alnarp, the focus is on landscape planning and horticulture.
